The 70'S Flicks

The 1970's was the era of the bellbottoms and platforms but with these iconic fashion was some iconic hairstyles as well as this was the era where women experimented with the hair. In the 70s women either had long soft and feminine to short and edgy hairstyles. The biggest influence for these looks came from celebrities such as Farrah Fawcett, Liza Minelli and Jane Fonda

The Shag Hairstyle

Shag being short of shaggy or also known as the gypsy (slightly shorter variant), shag, this looks consists of layers starting from the crown and gets thinner as you get to the bottom.
The hairstyle itself has a rugged and ready messy look, the fringe is generally complete and goes across the eye brows, typically kept between chin and shoulder length shown in figure 1. Below
The haircut gained fame after the 1971 film Klute staring Jane Fonda

Unlike other cuts such as the beehive that have a massive following then sharply fizzled out only to be revived in short bursts the shag had a small but consistent following in its trending peak and its decline went on into the 90’s as was exemplified by Jennifer Aniston which was popularised in the long running T.V. series Friends show in figure 2.

The modern shag:
The modern shag puts a lot more weight on the styling, there are myriad of both tools and products available today that give the distressed feel and texture therefore the style is not confined to the lengths typical to the 70’s shag and therefore can take a variety of shapes, an example of the modern shag would be Taylor Swift in the figure below.

The Page Boy Haircut

The pageboy haircut was big in the 70s this hairstyle you have the front fringe and the sides of the hair was cut up to the ear. This hairstyle to me looks very edgy and neat.

The 70s Afro
The 70s afro how can we ever forget this amazing hairstyle within this era the big beautiful round curled hairstyle is still iconically remembered till this date. Afro hair is naturally very curly and women back then would comb out their curls to create bigger hairdo.

The 70s Flick done in Class

  1. Section the hair from the middle creating a middle parting.
  2. The grab a curling tongs and start with the top by tonging each section back words.
  3. from the crown of the head start to do your brick work pinning in each curl in to a barrel curl.
  4. once the curls are in leave them to set and cool down.
  5. When the curls have set and cooled down you now take out the curls and brush through slightly with a paddle brush.
  6. add a little bit of back combing not too much to the roots to give the hair volume.
  7. finally dress out the from of the hair and you should end up with the 70's flick.
