The Frizzy Funky 1980's Hair

Today in class was all about the big, funky and fabulous 1980's hairstyle. The 1980's was the time when everything became bigger. It was all about big permed hair, back combed to the very extent curly hair and bright, funky neon colours.

There were different types of styles in the 80's that were very much in fashion. Of course the trend setters and biggest influencers of these styles were the celebrities.

The Rat Tail

This hairstyle was a very punkish look which was worn by men and women. They shaved the sides of the hair leaving the end of the hair to grow long and this would either be plaited or left out.

The Side Pony Tail

The side pony tails were very popular at this time where all the hair was swept to the side and tied in to a pony by using scrunchy or hairbands to create this look.

The Mullet

This hairstyle was worn by men and women, especially some celebrities and bands. The hair on top is short, almost as a boy cut, but the ends are long, in one length.

The Jersey Girl
This hairstyle was very popular in the 80's. I remember seeing old pictures of my mum and aunties with this hairstyle. To create this look women used to set their hair in rollers or get their hair permed and back comb the hair to the fullest extent using a lot of hairspray.

In class we learnt how to create the Jersey girl hair style using two different techniques.
The first technique I used was with curling tongs to create curls by doing brickwork on the hair and the other technique to create my curl was by diffusing the hair. These are techniques are used to get the volumised hair.

Technique 1. Using Curling Tongs
  1. Section the hair from the front, off-centre parting.
  2. Start with one side of the hair and pin away the other side.
  3. By starting from the bottom of the head start to create your brickwork by using a hair curling tongs and pinning it into a barrel curl.
  4. Once your brickwork is all done at one side, leave it to cool down.
  5. Now take out the brickwork and remove all the hair pins.
  6. Once you get all the brickwork out tease out the curls with an afro comb and add some back comb in the hair to achieve volume in the hair. Then add a little hair spray.
Technique 2. Diffusing the hair
  1. For the other side wet the hair down, not too much, just make the hair damp.
  2. Next grab a blow dryer and a diffuser and attach it to the front of your hairdryer.
  3. Start from the front and lift the hair in an upward motion to create volume and repeat this all over the hair.
Front section of the hair.
  1. Once the back is curled grab your front section, add a little back comb to get that lift, then apply hair spray or mousse to the hair.
  2. Hold the hair in place so that the product does not weigh down the hair and put the hairdryer on  a low temperature and speed. Dry the area where you have just applied product onto so it stays in place and stiffens the hair.
Once you have followed all those steps you should end up with a hairstyle as shown in the images below.

This is when you create your brickwork with hair tongs, only doing the back and leaving out the front section.

These images show Technique 2, diffusing hair, when working on the other side of the section.
This image shows how your brickwork should look once you have taken it out and back combed it.
This is the result for the front section once you apply hair spray or mousse on the front part and dry it to get that volumised fringe.

Once you have prepped the hair you can now create the Jersey girl hairstyle.

How to create this style:
  1. Grab all the hair from the sides just above the ear and pin it down. Repeat the same step on the other side.
  2. Then add in the front section.
  3. Next pick a ribbon of your choice, wrap it around the hair and tie into a bow.
  4. Once all is complete, just to make the hair look a little bigger back comb the ends of the hair and you are all done.
